Le Mans Test Day 2013

Last year in Le Mans it was a first experience in the Nissan DeltaWing, and this year a first again with an LMP2 car. New challenges are always exciting, so I enjoyed this day as much as last year actually. My first laps were in the wet, rather tricky conditions, but a good opportunity to explore the limits of the car at lower speeds.

It was more difficult than I had imagined to be on the limit in the wet, but we successfully were able to complete our run plan, which also included to make sure Jan Mardenborough did his 10 mandatory laps in order to qualify for his first Le Mans experience. I was surprised by his speed and the progress he made during his first laps. Le Mans is not an easy circuit to learn quickly and the penalty for failure can be rather big there with high speeds and walls and trees very close by.

Lucas Ordonez, already more experienced got the least laps on the test day, as he knows the car already very well, having been on the podium in Le Mans before. In the last couple of hours the track dried out and we were able to work on the setup. Our race engineer at Greaves is my long time friend Ricardo Divila with whom I worked in the past on several project in Japan with Nissan. So we have a great atmosphere in the team which is also helped by the family like Greaves Team.

We ended the day in P6 in our class, unfortunately I was thwarted by traffic on my last laps, but we should have the speed to enter the top 3. It would be great to qualify near the front next week as this would give us good confidence for our race performance. I'm looking very much forward to the race next weekend.

Now I'm off to Malaysia first for the next round of the Super GT with Kondo Racing. Changing from LMP2 to Super GT and vice versa shouldn't pose any problems as the cars are actually very similar from the grip level and power point of view. The biggest difference is that we are sitting outside in the LMP2 car and it is rather cold compared to the closed Super GT cars..

Good luck with everything
